Choosing Paint Colors for an Austin Home

Paint looks completely different in Austin light than it does on a little chip at the store. Here is how I help clients choose.

Our light is strong

Central Texas sun is bright and warm, especially on west facing walls in the afternoon. Colors that look soft in the store can wash out, and cool whites can feel stark.

Start with warm neutrals

Warm whites, soft creams, and greige tones tend to feel welcoming here. They also photograph well if you plan to sell.

Test before you commit

Paint large swatches on a few different walls, and look at them in the morning, afternoon, and at night with your lamps on.

Think about your floors and finishes

Your floors, countertops, and cabinets have undertones. Pull a paint color that works with them instead of fighting them.

Use color with intention

Want color? Try it in a powder room, an office, a front door, or on kitchen cabinets. Earthy greens, warm terracottas, and deep blues feel at home in Austin.

Sheen matters

Flatter finishes hide wall imperfections. Satin or semi gloss is easier to clean in kitchens, baths, and on trim.

If you are painting to sell, keep it soft and neutral. If you are painting to live, pick what makes you happy when you walk in the door.
