Moving From Denver to Austin: What Changed for Me
I grew up in Denver and moved to Austin a few years ago. If you are making the same move, here is what I learned.
The weather
Austin summers are long and hot, and winters are mild. I traded snow days for pool days. You will need sunscreen more than a snow shovel.
The landscape
No mountains, but plenty of water. Barton Springs, Lady Bird Lake, and the Hill Country lakes became my new weekend spots. The greenbelt trails help a lot when you miss hiking.
Taxes
Texas has no state income tax, but property taxes are higher than in Colorado. Factor that into your home budget.
Neighborhoods
Like Denver, Austin's central neighborhoods have older homes with character, and newer suburbs offer more space. Hyde Park was my first neighborhood here, and it reminded me of the older Denver neighborhoods I loved.
The food
Tacos and barbecue everywhere, and an amazing restaurant scene.
What I miss
Mountains, and real fall weather.
What I love
The people, the music, the water, and how welcoming Austin has been.
If you are moving from Colorado, I'd love to help you find your Austin home. I've been exactly where you are.
