How to Protest Your Property Taxes in Travis County
Every spring, homeowners receive a notice of appraised value from their county appraisal district. If your value seems too high, you have the right to protest.
The deadline
The deadline to protest is generally May 15 or 30 days after your notice was delivered, whichever is later. Check the date on your notice.
How to file
You can file your protest online through the Travis Central Appraisal District, by mail, or in person.
Build your case
- Recent sales of similar homes nearby
- Photos of needed repairs
- Contractor estimates for big issues
- Any errors in the district's record of your home, like square footage
Informal review and hearing
Many protests are resolved in an informal meeting with an appraiser. If not, you can present your case to the Appraisal Review Board.
Should you hire help?
Some homeowners hire tax consultants who charge a share of the savings. Many homeowners protest on their own successfully.
I can help
If you bought through me, I'm always happy to pull recent comparable sales for your protest.
