East Austin is a collection of neighborhoods just east of downtown, from Holly and Govalle to Rosewood and the blocks around East Cesar Chavez and Manor Road. It has a long history as the heart of Austin's Black and Mexican American communities, and it has changed dramatically over the last twenty years.
Housing
Early 1900s bungalows, modern homes on small lots, and condos and townhomes along the main corridors.
Location
Directly east of downtown across Interstate 35.
Local favorites
Huston-Tillotson University, Boggy Creek, Rosewood Park, and a deep restaurant and food truck scene.
Getting around
Grid streets, bike lanes, and bus routes, with downtown a short ride away.
East Austin sees steady buyer and rental activity, with a wide range in price between updated homes and original condition homes. Inspect older homes and new builds carefully, and check floodplain maps near the creeks.
