How to File Your Texas Homestead Exemption

The homestead exemption is one of the easiest ways to lower your property taxes in Texas. Here is how to file.

Who qualifies

You must own the home and live in it as your principal residence. You can only have one homestead.

What it does

  • Takes $140,000 off your home's taxable value for school district taxes
  • Other local taxing units may offer additional exemptions
  • Limits how much your home's taxable value can rise each year

How to file

  1. Go to your county appraisal district's website. In Travis County, that is the Travis Central Appraisal District.
  2. Fill out the residence homestead exemption application.
  3. Include a copy of your Texas driver's license or ID with your home's address.
  4. Submit it online or by mail.

When to file

You can file once you own and live in the home. Exemptions generally apply to the full year in which you qualify, so file soon after you move in.

It is free

You do not need to pay anyone to file your homestead exemption. Be careful of mailers that offer to do it for a fee.

After you file

Watch for confirmation from the appraisal district and check your next tax statement.

If you just closed on your home, add this to your first week to do list.
